Amazon is the world's leading e-commerce retail company, and if you're looking for a job, Amazon is a great place to start. They regularly offer thousands of jobs at any given moment.
That being said, Amazon is also known for having a pretty strict hiring process. Drug tests are a given, so that positive or negative result could be the only thing standing in the way of a shiny, new job!
Does Amazon Conduct A Drug Test?
Yes. For private employers, drug-free workplaces aren't required by law. On the other hand, Amazon stomps a giant tech-foot on drugs, implementing a standard procedure during their hiring process.
Amazon isn't interested in lawsuits that follow drug-related safety hazards, so they're keen to protect themselves from that.
If you're hoping to land a job at Amazon, you can expect to take these 3 steps:
- Amazon will briefly interview you to check if you're eligible to move onto step 2.
- A background check will be run, including asking questions about your work experience, personal life, and overall interview-type questions.
- You'll be asked to do a drug test - which you'll have to pass with flying colors.
Of course, different positions at Amazon will require a slightly different process to get hired. Regardless, the final step will always be a pre-employment drug test.
How Does Amazon Drug Test?
Amazon test for drugs via a mouth swab test - also known as a saliva drug test. You will be either asked for a saliva sample using a cotton swab, or they'll test via your spit. The whole procedure is pretty non-invasive, and it won't take more than a few seconds.
It's quite rare, but in some cases - mostly higher up positions like HR - they'll ask for a urine drug test. So, it's a good idea to be ready for either of these tests.
If you're worried about failing due to prescription medication, you should disclose your medical information beforehand. Amazon will consider this when testing.
It's also quite common to be tested after you have been hired. Amazon conducts random drug tests whenever they see fit. If they're suspicious about one of their employees using drugs, then a drug test will be conducted.

What Drugs Do Amazon Test For?
Amazon will check for the following drugs in your system:
- Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) - found in weed
- Phencyclidine (PCP)
They don't check for alcohol at Amazon, but it's best to stay away from alcohol in the days leading up to the interview. If you're applying for a warehouse position or any that is safety-sensitive, even the slightest hint of alcohol in your system could be the make or break of your new job.
How To Pass A Saliva Drug Test
Of course, being drug-free is always the best and most guaranteed way to pass a drug test. If you know a drug test is coming up, quit smoking or taking any drugs for a couple of weeks. This way, you'll naturally begin detoxing.
Make sure to exercise regularly, drink lots of water, and eat food rich in lean proteins and fiber. This way, you'll be able to flush out the drugs naturally.
If you can't do this for some reason, I do have some good news for you. Saliva or mouth swab tests can only detect recent drug use.
Marijuana smokers will be pleased to know THC (the compound that says in your body after smoking) only stays in your saliva for around 34 hours. So, even if you smoked a joint 3 days before the drug test, you should be okay.
For people who have used other drugs such as cocaine or LSD, it usually also stays present for around 24 hours. So, all you need to do to pass an Amazon drug test is to stay away from drugs for 2 or 3 days.
This also gives you a running chance if you've been selected for a random drug test at work.
If you only have a couple of days to flush out the drugs, try the following:
- Drink lots of water.
- Brush your teeth several times a day.
- Chew a detox gum.
- Use a cleansing mouth wash.
Both the gum and mouth wash are handy if you only have a few minutes to prepare for a mouth swab drug test.
So, How To Pass An Amazon Drug Test?
If you're planning on applying to work at Amazon, guaranteed you'll be drug tested before getting hired. You may also get selected for a random drug screening anytime during work.
Thankfully, the mouth swab test only detects recent drug use. To pass an Amazon drug test, avoid drug use a couple of days before testing is due.
You can also help flush the drugs out of your system by often exercising, drinking lots of water, brushing your teeth several times a day, and chewing on some detox gum.
