A routine traffic stop in El Paso County on the morning of October 14 turned into a significant drug bust, leading to the arrest of 44-year-old Osvaldo Luque-Camargo.
Deputy Roberts, working a traffic grant near Constitution Avenue and Marksheffel Road, noticed Luque-Camargo’s vehicle speeding with expired tags and initiated the stop.
Things quickly escalated. Luque-Camargo was driving without insurance and with a suspended license. Deputy Roberts also spotted a firearm in the center console, setting off alarm bells.
When asked about the car’s registration, Luque-Camargo’s conflicting answers only deepened the officer’s suspicions.
A search of the vehicle revealed 380 grams of methamphetamine, a firearm without a serial number, drug paraphernalia, a stack of debit cards not issued to him, over 100 gift cards, and ballistic body armor—painting a much darker picture.
Luque-Camargo now faces multiple charges, including possession of drugs for distribution, unlawful possession of financial devices, and a range of traffic violations. He is being held on a $50,000 bond at the El Paso County Detention Facility.
Sheriff Joseph Roybal commended Deputy Roberts’ quick thinking and diligence, stating that this arrest is a testament to the department’s commitment to keeping the community safe.
“What started as a routine stop ended with dangerous drugs and an illegal firearm off our streets,” Roybal noted.
This case serves as a stark reminder that sometimes, a simple traffic violation can be the thread that unravels much larger criminal activity.
