Last Updated On: January 22, 2025

A Sanford resident has been charged with aggravated fentanyl trafficking after authorities seized 40 grams of the powerful opioid during a police operation on York Street. The arrest culminates a month-long investigation fueled by citizen tips and law enforcement surveillance.

John Leroy Gray, 44, faces two counts of aggravated trafficking in fentanyl. Authorities allege that Gray’s single-family home at 8 York Street was a hub for drug activity.

Officers from the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency (MDEA), the York District Task Force, and Sanford police conducted undercover purchases during their investigation, which also revealed signs of individuals armed with firearms while engaging in drug trafficking.

At 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, a high-risk search warrant was executed with assistance from the Southern Maine Special Response Team. Their presence was necessitated by the gravity of the charges and concerns over potential weapons, as well as ensuring neighborhood safety.

Seventeen individuals found in the home were detained. While most were released after identification, six were arrested due to outstanding warrants.

The search uncovered approximately 40 grams of fentanyl, $1,800 in suspected drug proceeds, and additional evidence of drug trafficking. Four realistic pellet-style handguns were also located, though no actual firearms were recovered.

Law enforcement officials involved in the operation included agents from multiple agencies such as the FBI Safe Street Task Force, Federal Drug Enforcement Administration, York County Sheriff’s Office, Sanford Fire/Rescue, and the City of Sanford Code Enforcement.

Gray is being held at York County Jail on a $25,000 cash bail. Authorities have not confirmed whether he has legal representation. Residents with information related to this case or other illegal drug activities are encouraged to contact the MDEA tip line at 1-800-452-6457 or text “MDEA” to TIP411 (847411).

The raid underscores the ongoing battle against drug trafficking in Maine, highlighting the critical role of community vigilance and coordinated law enforcement efforts in tackling this public health crisis.
