In a coordinated strike last week, the Mexican Navy seized a record-breaking haul of drugs in a daring operation along the coasts of Michoacán and Guerrero.
A high-speed chase kicked off when a Navy patrol boat, aided by a helicopter, spotted a go-fast vessel with eight aboard.
Realizing they were being pursued, the crew tossed packages overboard, but it wasn’t enough to escape capture. The Navy retrieved 94 packages and 38 fuel drums, uncovering 2.1 tonnes of narcotics.
Soon after, a second vessel was intercepted, yielding another 1.1 tonnes of drugs and over 1,600 gallons of fuel, suggesting it was equipped for a long journey.
The operation continued as another boat off Guerrero’s shores was seized with 1.2 tonnes of contraband.
In a high-risk maneuver, Navy commandos boarded a semi-submersible in motion, capturing a further 2.2 tonnes of drugs.
The vessel, moving at top speed, was successfully subdued, showcasing the Navy’s exceptional boarding skills under extreme conditions.
Two smaller vessels were also taken, bringing in six crew members and 1.8 tonnes of narcotics. Altogether, the operation netted six boats, 23 suspects, 8.3 tonnes of drugs, and over 2,300 gallons of fuel.
Michoacán and Guerrero, infamous drug routes, are largely controlled by feuding cartels, including the CJNG and smaller factions, reinforcing the critical stakes of this monumental operation.
