In a turn of events that could’ve been scripted for TV, a routine traffic stop in Lakeview last Sunday became a major drug bust, thanks to the sharp nose of K9 Tega, a narcotics detection dog.
Officers pulled over 34-year-old Paul Shoffner from Belle Center around 3:30 PM for an obstructed license plate, not expecting what would come next.
Shoffner’s jittery demeanor raised eyebrows, leading officers to call in Tega.
The well-trained canine wasted no time, signaling the presence of drugs by sitting near the driver’s side door—a move that speaks volumes in law enforcement.
A search of the vehicle’s trunk unearthed a glass pipe and a small bag containing 2.42 grams of methamphetamine.
While Shoffner himself was clean, his car told a different story. He was arrested and charged with felony possession of a controlled substance and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia.
Shoffner now sits in Logan County Jail as investigators prepare for further analysis by the Bureau of Criminal Investigation. K9 Tega, once again, proves that even routine stops can lead to big results.
