The race for Davao City’s first congressional seat has taken a surprising turn.
Rather than beginning with campaign speeches or community visits, the two main contenders, incumbent Rep. Paolo Duterte and PBA party-list Rep. Margarita Nograles, have started their showdown in medical laboratories.
Both candidates took hair follicle drug tests on Wednesday—Duterte in Mandaluyong and Nograles in Davao—after challenging each other to prove they had “nothing to hide.”
These tests are known for their precision, providing insight into drug use over the last three months by detecting substances like cannabis and amphetamines.
This unusual election twist comes in the wake of Vice President Sara Duterte’s statement that she’d only take a psychiatric exam if other 2025 election candidates, particularly those who questioned her mental health, submitted to drug tests.
Her brother, Paolo, followed up with a video showing him undergoing a follicle test earlier this year. Nograles responded by inviting Duterte to take another test alongside her in Davao.
Nograles framed the tests as a matter of “accountability and transparency,” while Duterte retook the test, explaining that persistent drug-related accusations made it necessary to clear his name.
He cited rumors linking him to the drug trade, including allegations involving a significant methamphetamine shipment in 2018.
Both candidates come from politically powerful families, with deep ties to Davao’s history.
As the election draws closer, it’s clear that this contest will be fought on more than just policy—it’s about integrity and proving who’s ready to lead with a clean slate.
