Milwaukee Bucks forward Bobby Portis Jr. has been suspended for 25 games without pay after testing positive for Tramadol, a prescription painkiller, violating the NBA’s anti-drug policy.
Portis, a key contributor to the Bucks’ frontcourt, admitted to taking an unapproved anti-inflammatory medication while dealing with an elbow injury.
“I made an honest mistake,” Portis said. “I feel horrible and take full responsibility. I want to apologize to my teammates, coaches, the organization, my family, and the fans. I give everything on the court, and missing this time will be tough. But I’ll stay ready for our playoff run.”
His suspension kicks in immediately, starting with Milwaukee’s Thursday night matchup against the Los Angeles Clippers.
Bucks GM Jon Horst voiced support for Portis, calling the situation “difficult” but reaffirming confidence in the player’s return. “We respect the NBA’s decision, and Bobby will grow from this. He’s a vital part of our team and community, and we look forward to having him back.”
The 30-year-old big man is averaging 13.7 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 2.2 assists this season. A key figure in Milwaukee’s 2021 championship run, Portis has built a reputation as a high-energy player. Over his nine-year career, he has averaged 11.9 points and 7.2 rebounds across stints with the Bulls, Wizards, Knicks, and Bucks.
Milwaukee, currently fifth in the Eastern Conference at 29-24, will have to adjust without him for most of the remaining schedule. With only four games left after his suspension ends, his absence could prove costly.
Financially, the suspension will hit hard—Portis stands to lose nearly $2.9 million in salary, according to Spotrac.
The Bucks now face the challenge of filling the void left by one of their most consistent contributors, with hopes that Portis will return stronger for the season’s final stretch.
