An Amarillo resident will remain in custody until Monday after a routine traffic stop on I-40 escalated into a significant methamphetamine seizure.
On October 16, local deputies were patrolling Interstate 40 when they noticed a gray Toyota Camry failing to signal a right turn near Eastern.
After pulling over the driver, identified as Julian Mendoza Arenivar, officers reported noticing signs that suggested criminal activity.
A subsequent search of the vehicle, with Mendoza Arenivar’s consent, revealed four cardboard boxes filled with large black bags.
Upon inspection, these bags were found to contain a white crystalline substance, later confirmed as methamphetamine. The total haul? A staggering 114 pounds.
According to the DEA, this quantity of meth carries an estimated street value of $5 million, underscoring the scale of the bust.
Mendoza Arenivar will face a preliminary hearing on Monday, October 28, at 1:30 p.m., as officials continue to investigate the case.
